Story

In What Ails Us, you play as James, a teenager going through a rough time in his life. Due to past traumas and events, James has developed anxiety and depression, and has very vivid but terrifying hallucinations. 


Anxiety and Depression

In What Ails Us, anxiety and depression play a crucial role in bringing the story events together in a brutal and dark way, while being deep and insightful. Dialogue through interactable objects and cutscenes is also affected by either anxiety or depression. The level design also reflects what type of situation and mood James is in. For example, if he is in a situation where he feels anxious, the level and following cutscenes/hallucinations will be designed to reflect his feelings.

What Ails Us, at the time of writing (4/22/2021), is currently under HEAVY story and art developments. Story, game elements, and art could be changed drastically until full release. Keep coming back to this page to get updates on development.
